About Taylor Bros

Taylor Bros is a fourth-generation family owned and operated engineering business established 1936 in Hobart, Tasmania, the deepest port in Australia. Taylor Bros is a diversified and national enterprise, embedded with a strong culture that extends beyond family – evidenced by their many long-term employees working across Australia on multiple defence, Antarctic, offshore and oil & gas projects simultaneously. Taylor Bros has a distinct competitor advantage, with quality management principles and consistency reflected in their ISO 9001:2008 certification.

Taylor Bros has become a specialist in outfit accommodation services to the marine industry and has developed a prefabrication approach to projects for defence, oil and gas and maritime industry. Prefabrication is advantageous as it increases the amount of work conducted at Taylor Bros’ Hobart facility, which is set up for outfit accommodation activities. This reduces the amount of fabrication required at the shipyard during build or maintenance, thus increasing efficiency and productivity, compressing the project schedule and reducing the project cost.

Taylor Bros has been involved in accommodation projects for both the Royal Australian and Royal New Zealand Navies. In 2009, Taylor Bros was awarded a $25 million contract for outfit accommodation supplies and services to the Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) project. This comprises supply of metal joiner bulkheads and doors, modular sanitary spaces, galley, servery, scullery, refrigerated spaces and laundry equipment, the fabrication of ship’s furniture and the design and prefabrication of berthing
spaces, sanitary spaces, mess rooms, offices and meeting rooms. In 2013 a $15 million extension was awarded to include installation of the supplies and components into the three AWDs at the ASC Shipyard. In 2012, Taylor Bros was awarded contracts to supply and install furniture and equipment to BAE Systems for Zone 8 and the Medical Spaces of the Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) Ships. These contracts include the provision of design documentation and spare parts to BAE for various ship systems.

Between 2004 and 2008, Taylor Bros completed work for BAE (then Tenix) on Project Protector for the prefabrication and installation of interior panelling systems and furniture for two Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) for the RNZN, including accommodation spaces, galley, mess areas and sanitary spaces. Taylor Bros has subsequently been awarded a contract with the RNZN for the supply of Integrated Logistic Support (ILS) to the OPVs over a 10 year period. Taylor Bros also supplies materials and equipment directly to the Defence Materiel Organisation in support of various navy vessels.

Taylor Bros is active in the offshore oil and gas industry providing outfit accommodation and structural fabrication services. This industry requires high standards of safety in both design and manufacture and certification of supplies to class rules. Oil and gas projects are required to be delivered to tight schedules, dependent on production, weather and the availability of support vessels to complete. Taylor Bros excels at providing products and services that meet these high demands. Customers include Maersk Drilling, Stena Drilling, Diamond Offshore, Modec Management Services, Songa Offshore, Origin Energy, Apache Energy, BHPB, Trelleborg and Fitzroy Engineering. 40% of our employees have current OPITO approved BOSIET Certificates and MSIC Cards.

Taylor Bros have been contractors to the Australian Antarctic Division, CSIRO and P&O Maritime for 25 years providing maintenance and upgrades to Australian and international supply and research vessels, rebuilding main engines, gearboxes, cranes, mechanical systems, and installing accommodation and research equipment during layup periods. Taylor Bros have developed innovative Modular accommodation solutions to withstand the harsh maritime environments found at Antarctic bases.

The Tasmanian Government’s TT Line vehicular and passenger ferries Spirit of Tasmania I and II, that transit between Devonport and Melbourne, have undergone major refurbishment of all passenger areas and extensions to vehicular ramps to increase carrying capacity on this important Bass Strait tourist and freight route. Upgrade works were undertaken by Taylor Bros while the ships were in service and without a loss of sailing time.

Geographical location has not limited Taylor Bros areas of operation, with projects undertaken throughout Australia, South East Asia and New Zealand including offshore support services, maintenance, refit and repair, equipment installation, accommodation units, Defence and Antarctic projects.
